A Grand Design?

The Earth seen from Apollo 17.

Quite often, those who are quick to dismiss the existence of God or even the validity of a divine creator, don’t give any real thought to the idea.  More often than not, when asked if they believe in God, an unbeliever my simply tut, give a shake of the head or expel a huff of indignation.  A believer may say, “Do you believe in God?” and the unbeliever may reply, “No. It is pure fantasy; ancient thoughts and ideas from a superstitious world long ago, that has no relevance in a modern, civilised and scientific society.”

On the occasion when an unbeliever does offer an opinion, they may only express their disdain with scoffing and name calling with terms such as ‘sky fairy’ and ‘invisible friend.’

And if answered with a more reasoned response they will often become caught up with-in the idea that science and physics prove such a belief illogical and impossible.

What I find impossible is the idea that the world came into existence without God.

The best analogy I ever heard was that the earth coming into being from nothing, being formed in such a perfect and precise way to support and maintain life forms, is like a hurricane blasting through a junk yard creating a Jumbo Jet.  And how much more complicated and precise is this planet than an aeroplane?

I look at the world around me and I ponder the beauty of the flowers, their magnificent smells that attract insects to allow pollination.  Unbelievers say yes, that is nature.  But where does nature come from?  How can it just be?  How did nature work out that to attract a bee, the flower must be beautiful and fragrant?  Surely that is giving nature a brain.  And if nature has a brain, which it certainly must, then that brain has to be God.

None of that can be just random.  It’s one thing the earth coming into being from a big bang, it’s quite another for it to run along such lines as to be fruitful and succesful, to be perfect enough to address the needs of all things!  How can there be no God?

What would the seas be without the tidal pulls created by the moon?  Stagnant, and therefore difficult to sustain all life forms beneath the ocean.  How can the moon do this perfectly by a random act of being?  Half the planet is in daylight, half in nighttime.  Perfect for working and getting things done during the day, then a dark half to rest and replenish.  How perfect this random planet revolves and turns around so as to be all things to all creatures!

There are many more examples as to the proof of God.  Next time you wonder at nature, imagine there is no God.  How impossible!

Psa 19:1  For the choir director; a psalm by David. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky displays what his hands have made.
As Matthew Henry puts it in his commentary;  The heavens so declare the glory of God, and proclaim his wisdom, power, and goodness, that all ungodly men are left without excuse. They speak themselves to be works of God’s hands; for they must have a Creator who is eternal, infinitely wise, powerful, and good. The counter-changing of day and night is a great proof of the power of God, and calls us to observe, that, as in the kingdom of nature, so in that of providence, he forms the light, and creates the darkness, (Isa_45:7) and sets the one against the other.
